Innovative school projects in rural areas

School class in Honduras

For many young people in rural areas, there is no education beyond primary school. Without the prospect of further education or vocational training which would enable them to find work and become independent, many try their luck in town where they frequently get in contact with criminal youth gangs. In order to help remedy this situation, our main focus in Honduras is on innovative primary school projects in rural areas.

Secondary education for young people

High quality secondary education is the objective of our project. The alternative education programme focuses on the specific living conditions of rural populations. Students acquire the skills to work for the benefit of their community by taking leading roles in the economic and social development of their region.

Primary education for Lenca and Garifuna

Our second project seeks to raise the quality of education for indigenous and black children in two departments, fostering the children’s participation in school. Initially this shall be achieved by creating a baseline with the participation of the Rights Holders in the process. Using the results as a foundation, a curriculum will be designed in response to the training interests of the different actors participating in the project. Once the curriculum has been designed, 60 promoters shall be trained in different issues regarding children’s rights by means of an accredited process culminating in a diploma in children’s rights certified by CONEANFO, the governmental agency that is in charge of certifying non-formal education processes.
