Our programmes in East Africa
Some 45 million boys and girls do not attend school in the Sub-Saharan countries of Africa. The projects of the Pestalozzi Children’s Foundation in Ethiopia and Tanzania provide children and adolescents with improved access to good quality basic education. Emphasis is placed on girls’ education. We apply innovative approaches to holistic education which enable everybody who is involved, from nursery children to educational authorities, to decide how safe and childfriendly their schools are.
Many children attend school for a few years only. During the short time available, we want to enable them to learn how to read, write and count. Together with an understanding of the values of peaceful coexistence and the ability to organise one’s learning process, these basic skills will put children in a better position to lead independent lives one day. Children and adolescents have a say in our projects. Active participation strengthens their self-confidence and prepares them to take their lives in their own hands.
At present, Pestalozzi Children’s Foundation does not support any projects in Eritrea.
