Education for ethnic minorities in mother tongue
Child-oriented teaching, qualified teachers and a creative environment enable children to enjoy learning and to develop their personal and social skills. In three projects in Thailand, the Pestalozzi Children’s Foundation promotes mother tongue class room teaching and the integration of local knowledge and skills into curricula.
Local partner organisations train local adults to become bilingual teachers and, on their part, to prepare young people to become instructors. Thai teachers working in rural areas are trained to teach in local languages as well. As a result, each school and each education centre has a local teacher and a Thai teacher at the same time.
In addition, informal education centres are set up for adults and older students who dropped out of school prematurely. In areas without public schools these centres are also used as primary school. This structure helps to improve and assure the quality of the tuition.
