What you can learn

PCF Intercultural Exchange Projects in the Children’s Village are addressed to groups of 40 children/youth. Participants live together in a house, attend courses on intercultural education and child rights, and engage in intercultural exchange with another youth group, either from Switzerland or from another country. Designed in this way, PCF Intercultural Exchange Projects cover the four pillars of holistic education as defined by UNESCO, and refer to the trichotomy «I-You-We» of intercultural education.

  • Learning to know: The courses provide children and youth with information about intercultural communication, child rights and anti-racism.
  • Learning to be: This knowledge is always applied to the children and youth themselves. They learn to become aware of themselves, their attitudes, beliefs and behaviour, as well as of attitudes, beliefs and behaviour of others. Differences and similarities are identified, and challenges and opportunities of diversity are discussed.
  • Learning to do: On the basis of this newly acquired knowledge and awareness, constructive ways of dealing with diversity are tried out and discussed.
  • Learning to live together: The Children’s Village with its independent houses gives the group the opportunity to experience a camp atmosphere and to live together as a group whilst, at the time, living together with other groups within the Village.
  • Learning in the Children’s Village: Intercultural encounter in the «neutral» territory of the Children’s Village, far away from participants’ everyday surroundings, is highly conducive to intercultural learning. A vast variety of learning situations and encounters with different individuals and groups, in formal and in non-formal settings, intensify learning experiences and render them more effective and sustainable.
  • Learning for the accompanying adults: The adults who accompany the group of children/ youth are expected to participate in courses and intercultural exchange. By doing so, they can acquire methods and approaches used by PCF staff.
