Children's rights: do you know them?

Under this title, teachers from all over Switzerland provide free educational methods that enable a lively approach to children's rights. In collaboration with three other organisations, the Pestalozzi Children's Village has developed educational teaching materials for schools on children's rights.

The teaching materials were developed from 2020 to 2024 in collaboration with the Pestalozzi Children's Foundation, Terre des Hommes Suisse, terre des hommes schweiz and Integras . Each year is dedicated to a specific children's rights topic, which was defined together with children and young people:

  • 2021: The right to free time
  • 2022: The right to equal rights and equal opportunities
  • 2023: The right to a clean, healthy and sustainable environment
  • 2024: The right to mental health

Experiencing children's rights: The Pestalozzi Children's Village's commitment

The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, which was adopted in 1989 and ratified by Switzerland in 1997, formulates the rights of children.

The work of the Pestalozzi Children's Village is based on the one hand on its commitment to the realisation of these rights in Switzerland and worldwide. On the other hand, children and young people are directly encouraged and enabled in courses to develop the skills that are essential for their personal development and their social commitment, with the focus on the children's individual living environment - children's rights should become concrete, tangible and experienceable for them.

When dealing with children's rights, there needs to be space to develop one's own attitudes and values, to question existing attitudes and to make complex relationships more tangible. This is precisely where the exercises in the teaching materials come in - by offering an experience-orientated approach to children's rights.
